Estrangement

Estrangement is the term used to describe a loss of relationship with family. This can include a physical distance between the individual and the family and/or an emotional distance. The reasons for this distance can be broad. Examples might include but are not limited to a negative or unhealthy relationship which causes distance, family conflict, abuse or neglect, a death or disparity in values or beliefs.

Estrangement is unique to each individual, therefore the way in which people manage this is different.

What can you do to support yourself?

Talking– talk to someone you feel comfortable with. This might be another relative, a friend, the HE Welfare Team or the chaplaincy

Allow yourself to feel – there are many emotions that you might experience. Allow yourself to feel and process these emotions. This is perfectly normal and healthy

Self-care – ensure you look after yourself as much as you can. Trying to maintain a healthy sleep routine, getting outside in the fresh air and eating well are important
