Bereavement by Suicide

How is grief from suicide different?

Bereavement by suicide can often leave others feeling responsible for the death, can leave them with unanswered questions and mixed emotions. People who feel stigmatised by a sudden death by suicide are at greater risk of suicidal behaviour and depression.

Common emotional symptoms of bereavement by suicide can include:

  • Shocked or numb
  • Sad
  • Anxious
  • Exhausted
  • Relieved
  • Guilty
  • Angry
  • Calm
  • Lacking in purpose
  • Resentful

What can you do to support yourself?

There are things which you might like to try which you might find helpful:

Talking– talk to someone you feel comfortable with. This might be another relative, a friend, the HE Welfare Team or the chaplaincy

Allow yourself to feel – there are many emotions that you might experience during the grieving period. Allow yourself to feel and process these emotions. This is perfectly normal and healthy

Time- there is no time limit to grief and it can often be experienced in waves. Do not put pressure on yourself

Self-care – ensure you look after yourself as much as you can. Trying to maintain a healthy sleep routine, getting outside in the fresh air and eating well are important
