Family
It is normal for families to experience issues and challenges. Examples might include but are not limited to ill health, bereavement, loss of work, family breakdown and finances. How people deal with family issues varies greatly. Living away from home at times might amplify how you are feeling and the emotions experienced. You might feel too far away to help or support you family, feel excluded from what is happening or even relieved that you are not at home. This is all completely normal.
It might be that you do not like being at home, or do not look forward to returning home during the holiday periods. Everyone’s experience of home and what this looks like is different.
What can you do to support yourself?
Talking– talk to your family if you feel able to. If you can, communicate about how you are feeling and what your worries are. If you feel unable to speak to your family, consider talking to another relative, a friend, the HE Welfare Team or the chaplaincy.
Allow yourself to feel – there are many emotions that you might experience. Allow yourself to feel and process these emotions. This is perfectly normal and healthy
Self-care – ensure you look after yourself as much as you can. Trying to maintain a healthy sleep routine, getting outside in the fresh air and eating well are important
Support- think about your support system and what this looks like. Having a support network or someone you feel able to speak to when you are struggling can be helpful, particularly when you are living away from home.
